Learn about Leighton Buzzard's history as part of festival of autumn walks

Bedfordshire Ramblers have announced details of this year’s autumn festival of walks, with more than 50 taking place across the county over the course of nine days.

Running from September 6 to 13, the programme features walks for all abilities with the opportunity to explore the more than 1,500 miles of rights of way across Bedfordshire.

Some of the walks require pre-booking, and the majority are free to attend, with some featuring pub stops.

The full programme is available here, including contact details for leaders, but here are a few examples of walks in and around Leighton Buzzard that you can take part in.

On Wednesday, September 9 there is a mile-long medieval walk showcasing the development of Leighton Buzzard through its buildings.

The walk starts at Market Cross at 10am and covers stories including Market Cross and the growth of markets, inns and trade.

On Thursday, September 10 there is a longer seven-mile walk starting at Tiddenfoot Waterside Country Park on Mentmore Road at 9am, with a route going around Linslade.

On Sunday, September 13 there is a Sands of Time Trail walk starting at Market Cross at 10am.

This follows the Sands of Time trail with the chances to hear stories of Leighton Buzzard’s industries.

The whole walk is 12 miles, but there is an option to do morning only (starting 10am, seven miles) or afternoon only (starting 1.30pm from Market Cross, five miles).

The programme is organised by the Bedfordshire Ramblers, who write: “In conjunction with other walking and special interest groups, we aim to bring you a varied programme of walks throughout the nine days of this festival.

“Bedfordshire Ramblers would like to extend thanks to all those involved in contributing to this festival programme, both organisations and walk leaders.”
