Leighton Leisure and Community Centre to reopen pool after water 'contaminated' by human waste

Leighton Leisure and Community Centre is set to reopen its main pool at 1pm today (July 21) after the water was contaminated with human waste.

The centre had to close the main pool yesterday afternoon after a "faecal incident", and staff have since explained that its filtration systems can't remove contamination immediately.

The team thanked everyone for their "patience and understanding", while they ensure the pool is safe to reopen.

Commenting on the LBO's Facebook post, a Leighton Leisure and Community Centre spokesman, said: "[Our] pool filtration systems aren’t designed to instantly remove contamination from human waste. Any faecal incident requires us to follow strict public health procedures, which can include temporarily closing the pool while additional treatment and water quality checks are carried out.

"These procedures are in place to protect everyone’s health and safety, and they’re the same regardless of how modern or advanced the filtration system is."

The centre also added to its own post, writing: "P.S. Rest assured, everyone is absolutely fine. We’ll spare you the details… but we’re sure you can read between the lines (or should that be number twos?)"

Meanwhile, it has apologised for the "ongoing disruption" in relation to its air conditioning system, explaining that engineers have been on site over the past couple of weeks.

Further overnight works are also taking place to investigate the issue.

The spokesman added: "We’re hopeful the root cause has now been identified.

"We’re working closely with the contractors to get it resolved as quickly as possible.

"We know how frustrating it’s been for both our members and our team, and we really appreciate your patience while the work is completed."
