Sun shines on '˜best ever' carnival... eventually!

The forecast was thundery showers but after a couple of early downpours the sun shone on St Mary's Carnival '“ much to the delight of the thousands who thronged to Edelsborough Green.

Chairman Gordon Gray said: “This was probably the best ever – the Green was absolutely crowded.

“It was the most wonderful day out in a beautiful rural location and the atmosphere was really special.

“At a time when so many carnivals are being cancelled through lack of council funding, our model works because we have such good support from local businesses and the community.

People like to be part of it and we have more than 100 volunteers. It was lovely to see so many people enjoying themselves.”

Highlights of the day included the Whitchurch Morris Men and the very amusing sausage-eating competition for dogs.

It’s estimated the event will have raised £13,000, to be split between the church’s fabric fund and defibrillators.

See this week’s Leighton Buzzard Observer and Dunstable Gazette for more pictures from the event.
