With summer temperatures expected to be high again this week, breaking out the water pistols and cooling off with a good old fashioned water fight is going to be an exciting prospect for many kids.

But now Hasbro, the makers of the popular range of Nerf Supersoaker water guns, have recalled a number of their products over fears they may be unsafe.

Which products have been affected?

Hasbro's recall, announced on 30 July, affects the Super Soaker XP 20 and XP 30 variants of its popular, water-based weapons.

The Super Soaker XP 20 is a green and orange hand-held water blaster, while the XP 30 is an orange and blue hand-held water blaster

Why have they been recalled?

The decorative sticker on the water tank of the Super Soaker XP 20 and Super Soaker XP 30 water blasters "may contain levels of lead in the ink that exceed regulatory limits," according to Hasbro.

"The presence of lead is limited to the decorative sticker affixed to the water tank of the blasters,” the company clarifies.

No injuries relating to the discretion have been reported, and Hasbro is blaming the defect on "a third-party manufacturer" that sourced the stickers from an "unauthorised supplier, without our consent and in violation of our quality assurance procedures and requirements."

"As soon as we became aware of the potential issue, we immediately launched an investigation and implemented precautionary containment measures," Hasbro added.

What should I do if I own one of the products?

Hasbro says consumers should immediately stop using the affected product and contact the company for instructions on how to return the product and receive a full refund.

Those returning their Supersoakers will be asked to unscrew the tank from the blaster and return the tank to the manufacturer using a postage prepaid label, for a full refund.
