Central Beds Council Leader Column: Have your say on development
One of the biggest issues residents raise with me is development. Where new homes are built, the services and infrastructure that come with them, and how we protect and enhance our countryside. These are issues nearly everyone has a view on.
Well, now is your chance to help shape those plans.

Central Bedfordshire Council has launched a consultation to help inform the next Local Plan - a process that will ultimately guide development in our area up to 2050. That might feel a long way off, but the decisions made now will have lasting consequences for our towns, villages and green spaces.
The scale is significant. Government targets mean the number of extra new houses required has risen to around 25,500. That growth is not optional; it is driven by national policy. The real choice we face is not whether development happens, but how and where it does.
Without a robust Local Plan, that choice slips away. Development can happen anyway, often through speculative applications that are harder for councils to resist. A plan gives communities a stronger voice in shaping where development can happen, what it looks like and what services and facilities are provided with it.
And it provides extra protection. Although importantly it does not mean there can be no extra development outside of the Local Plan.
At this early “scoping” stage, the council is not asking people to comment on specific sites – that comes later. Instead, it is asking what matters most: access to green space, transport links, jobs, schools, healthcare, and the protection of the environment. These priorities will influence decision making throughout the development of the Local Plan.
At the heart of this debate is a simple truth. We need homes for the next generation, but we also want to preserve the character of our communities and countryside. Striking that balance is vitally important.
But one thing is certain: the council can only take account of the views it receives.
If you want a say in the future of Central Bedfordshire, please take part.
