Central Beds Council Leader Column: Making the most of the summer holidays

The summer holidays are now underway, bringing opportunities for children and families to relax, explore, and spend time together. While the break from school is something many look forward to, finding affordable ways to keep everyone entertained can sometimes be a challenge.

That's why I'm delighted that there are hundreds of activities taking place across Leighton Buzzard and the wider area this Summer, many of them free or low cost, helping families enjoy the holidays without stretching their budgets.

Our libraries, children's centres and leisure centres have a variety of activities running throughout the break. Children can get involved in craft sessions, games, creative activities and the ever-popular Summer Reading Challenge, which encourages young readers to discover new books while having fun along the way.

Leighton Buzzard Library is running an interactive workshop combining beatboxing, live looping, rap, poetry and storytelling inspired by well-known books.

The new leisure centre in Leighton Buzzard is hosting family swim sessions, pickleball, soft play, climbing and much more throughout the holidays.

There's also a range of inclusive events available for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities.

Of course, summer is also a great time to get outdoors and enjoy the fantastic green spaces on our doorstep such as Rushmere Country Park, There are plenty of opportunities for families to just enjoy nature or take part in organised activities such as the Bug Lab at Knolls Wood, Linslade Wood or Tiddenfoot Waterside Park.

To explore the full range of activities and find events near you, visit our School Holiday Activities page at www.centralbedfordshire.gov.uk/school-holiday-activities or sign up for our emails at www.centralbedfordshire.gov.uk/updates

I hope everyone enjoys a memorable summer break.
