International Croquet comes to Leighton Linslade

Leighton Linslade Croquet Club was very proud to host a heat of the European Club League, at Pages Park, over the weekend of 1st and 2nd August. This was one of 16 such competitions occurring all over the country this summer, with the winners due to play a final in Carrickmines in Ireland.

Four teams came together to compete in three matches; all playing all. It was a very close run thing with the team from Tolkis (wearing red), in south West Finland coming out a victors.

This is quite a feat as they play their croquet on one artificial grass lawn in the middle of a pitch otherwise used for football. Tolkis were not the only team hampered by circumstance. The Spanish team, Golf XAZ, from North West Spain, arrived in the UK without their croquet mallets, which remained in Madrid Airport for the whole weekend.

The generous Leighton Linslade members, who were not playing, kindly donated a selection of mallets for them to choose from. Not to be left out, the team from Switzerland, Zurich, had to leave before all the games had been completed as they had a flight to catch. An eventful competition all round.

Despite these various setbacks, a great weekend was had by all. Thanks go out to the many, many people who made it possible, particularly the LLTC Grounds team, who ensured that everything was in tip top condition for the visitors. Thanks also to The Cottage Italian Bistro who hosted a splendid Saturday evening meal, despite the 33 diners arriving an hour later than expected.

Some readers may be unfamiliar with the enjoyable, yet sometimes vicious, sport of croquet. At present Leighton Linslade are opening their lawns to anyone who would like a try.
