Youngsters celebrate musical anniversary

A number of children aged between four and 14 from the local area are to mark the 40th birthday of the musical Bugsy Malone.

It is being put on by Leighton Buzzard Children’s Theatre and Mini Theatre members to mark 40 years since Alan Parker’s film hit the big screen.

More than 100 local youngsters make up the 5 casts ably assisted by an army of youth helpers who have choreographed dances, directed scenes and taught songs.

The musical tells the story of Bugsy, Blousy, Fat Sam, Dandy Dan and Tallulah with plenty of slapstick comedy.

Bugsy Malone follows the rivalry between two gangs and the washed up, well-intentioned, one-time boxer who steps in to take control of Fat Sam’s gang and give Dandy Dan and his boys what they’ve got coming.

Sally Allsopp from the children’s theatre said: “In this film noir spoof, the message is one of good, clean fun;.

“The characters are wonderful cartoon cutouts; and the weapons of choice are splurge guns, silly string, flour bombs, and custard pies. With all those favourite hit songs including Bad Guys, So You Wanna Be a Boxer’and Tomorrow.
