Bedfordshire firefighters to take part in tribute marking 25th anniversary of 9/11

Three members of Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service will travel to Atlanta, USA, to take part in the 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb, marking the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks.

Firefighter Martin Spright, Group Commander James West and Station Commander Emily Crawford will join forces with firefighters from fire and rescue services across the UK to pay tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

The challenge will see participants climb 110 storeys - the height of the World Trade Centre towers - while wearing full firefighting kit. Those taking part are raising funds for the Fire Fighters Charity in the UK and the Terry Farrell Firefighters Fund in the United States.

Firefighter Martin Spright said: "I wanted to take on this challenge as a mark of respect for the 343 firefighters who gave everything in the line of duty, and for every emergency service worker who made the ultimate sacrifice trying to save others."

The Bedfordshire colleagues have been training in preparation for the challenge, which will test both their physical endurance and determination.

Rob Hulatt, Assistant Chief Fire Officer at Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: "We’re incredibly proud of Martin, James and Emily for taking on this challenge. The challenge is a reminder of the courage and sacrifice shown by the New York Fire Department firefighters on 9/11, and a reminder of the dedication shown by firefighters every day in serving and protecting their communities.

“I wish them the very best of luck and thank everyone who supports their fundraising efforts."

Anyone wishing to support the team and donate to the charities can do so via Crowdfunding For Memorial Stair Climb.
