Leighton Buzzard golfers top £100k for good causes

A group of Leighton Buzzard golfers have just topped a landmark £100,000 in money raised and donated to local charities.

Over the past 20 years, retired local bookmaker Geoff Dimmock and golfing colleagues affectionately known as the ‘Plum Duffs’ have raised the money at regular Thursday meetings at the Plantation Road-based Leighton Buzzard Golf Club, donating every penny raised annually to local worthy causes focusing mainly on the sick, needy, the young and the elderly.

Now at the age of 83, former milkman Geoff and wife Pam are looking for volunteers to help with the administration involved in the planning and management of the one-day event which is well supported by local businesses and residents.

Says Geoff: “Virtually every penny raised goes straight to a local worthy cause and we want that focus to continue. It’s such an enjoyable day and we want that to continue.

“The October event last year took the total raised to just short of £100,000. We are now well into higher figures and feel this is an appropriate time to get some young enthusiasts on board so we continue to help those at a time of need.”

Money raised by the Plum Duffs last year has been donated to Milton Keynes Hospital. Money raised in the next 12 months is to be donated for the treatment of Huntington’s disease, a fatal genetic disorder.

The Plum Duffs golf competition this year was won by Jeff Beesley with 41 points, beating Andrew Woodman, Andrew Money, Chris Newnham by a shot and Jason Brooks and Chris Ive finishing with 40 points.

Born in Leighton Buzzard and a resident in Stoke Road, Linslade, Geoff was awarded the BEM by the Queen in 2021 for services to the Leighton Leighton and Linslade communities, and attended a Garden Party with wife Pamela at Buckingham Palace almost a year later.
