Leighton Buzzard wildlife group celebrates 50th birthday with special talk

The North Buckinghamshire Local Group of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), which covers Leighton Buzzard and Linslade, is celebrating its 50th birthday with a special talk this week.

One of 140 local groups of the RSPB, it holds a busy programme of walks and talks and is open to all wildlife enthusiasts.

As well as Leighton Buzzard and Linslade, the branch also covers Milton Keynes, Buckingham and Winslow.

Group leader Jim Austin said: “For 50 years, the group has provided a home to those with a love of nature.

“We plan a busy future with walks and talks programmes, partnerships with local nature organisations, live events, conservation and campaigning activities.

“I am proud to be leading such a lively community into the decades ahead.”

The group will celebrate its 50th anniversary on June 17 when its meeting will feature a talk from Matt Hulme, the RSPB’s project manager for the Kingsbrook development near Aylesbury.

Visitors are welcome to attend the meeting, which is being held at Whaddon Way Church Centre in Bletchley from 7.30pm to 9.30pm.

It will be preceded by the group’s short annual general meeting.

Kingsbrook is a project which aims to integrate wildlife into large-scale new housing, through a partnership between the RSPB, housebuilder Barratt Redrow Homes and local councils.

The Kingsbrook development has been described as ‘an inspiring example of how communities, nature, and sustainable living can come together in harmony.’

The RSPB was founded in 1889, under the name The Society for the Protection of Birds, and is now the UK’s largest wildlife charity, with more than one million members.
