Power company start repairs to faulty Leighton Buzzard streetlights - but says some aren't even connected

A power company has started repairs to a series of faulty streetlights in Leighton Buzzard.

UK Power Networks has begun work on 13 streetlights on Leighton Road in the town, which have been out of action for the past year.

There are 16 streetlights on the road, between Stanbridge Road Co-Op and Fraserfields Way, and concerns were raised after multiple failures meant that only three out of the 16 were working.

UK Power Networks told the LBO: “A total of 11 faulty streetlights in Leighton Road were reported to us by Central Bedfordshire Council on December 11.

“While the local authority own the streetlights, we supply the power to them.

“Our engineers first visited on December 15, and completed repairs to six of the streetlights on January 26. Three others are being investigated on January 28.

“The remaining two are not connected to an electricity supply and the council will need to apply for that.”

Liberal Democrat councillor for Leighton Linslade South Chris Leaman has submitted a question to a Central Bedfordshire Council meeting on January 29, to try and find out why the council have adopted streetlights that have no electricity going to them.

The issues were first reported through the FixMyStreet platform in October 2024.

In response to UK Power Networks Cllr Leaman said: “It's good news that these have been fixed but why on earth did it take almost 18 months?

“The council and UK Power Networks need to look at how they are working together because something has clearly gone wrong here for there to be such a delay."
