"The best thing I've ever done" Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue is on the lookout for more on-call firefighters

Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service (BFRS) is on the lookout for more on-call firefighters and is urging people who are ‘committed and enthusiastic’ to consider taking up the profession.

On-call firefighters balance providing emergency cover alongside their pre-existing jobs and commitments, responding to fires, road traffic collisions, water rescues and other incidents in their communities.

Mark Garrett, head of protection and response at Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: “We’re looking for committed and enthusiastic individuals from all walks of life who are interested in developing new skills, earning additional income and becoming part of a close-knit team.

This role fits around your job, family and lifestyle while providing an opportunity to make a real difference in your community.”

Those who are selected will receive comprehensive training and are expected to attend a weekly drill night to maintain their skills and carry out equipment checks and audits.

A monthly retaining fee will be provided to on-call firefighters, as well as additional payments for responding to emergencies, attending training courses and carrying out station-based activities.

Abi Donohue, florist and on-call firefighter at Ampthill Community Fire Station, said: “Being an on-call firefighter is a juggling act, but it’s worth it. Being part of a great team and helping the community we love makes it the best thing I’ve ever done.”

Anyone interested in becoming an on-call firefighter is invited to get in touch, with the service keen to hear from people based in Ampthill, Bedford, Biggleswade, Harrold, Kempston, Leighton Buzzard, Potton, Sandy, Shefford, Toddington and Woburn.

Phil Prout, principal consultant and crew commander for Potton Fire Station, said: “I originally joined the fire service to challenge myself and use my life experience to help others.

“Since joining in 2019, I have progressed from firefighter to crew commander. The training qualifications and experience I have gained through the service have helped me to develop professionally and personally. This has enhanced my main career while also providing a genuine sense of purpose and achievement.”

You must be over the age of 18, physically fit, have a full UK driver’s license and live or work close to your priority station.

Applications for the role will be officially opened on July 13.
