Bang out of order: Local MP welcomes firework crackdown

The noisiest fireworks are set to be banned under new government plans welcomed by local MP Alex Mayer.

Meanwhile new rules would make it crystal clear that certain fireworks containing multiple launch tubes are illegal.

Ms Mayer has long campaigned for tougher firework rules, including delivering a petition to Downing Street calling on government to reduce the noise levels of fireworks. Speaking previously in Parliament she led calls to “keep the whoosh but not the bang.”

The MP says it’s a big issue locally. Recent examples from her postbag include a Dunstable woman who asked for help with fireworks being used anti-socially that are a “real nuisance” while another constituent complained that one of her dogs is “terrified of fireworks… so every year around November - December is a nightmare”.

Now the formal Government consultation has begun ahead of tightening the laws on the sale and use of fireworks, which Ms Mayer has welcomed.

Alex Mayer MP said: “When the sky is lit up with sparkling colours at organised displays, fireworks can spark joy and bring people together. But there’s a darker side too with fireworks thrown around dangerously and loud bangs causing misery. That’s why action is needed. So I’m delighted ministers have listened to local people.”

Research shows fireworks are the top cause of fear responses in dogs, with around 45% showing signs of anxiety.

People with autism and veterans and others with PTSD can also find sudden bangs distressing.
