Eight youngsters aged 6 to 9 put their questions directly to their Member of Parliament, Alex Mayer, in a lively Q&A session.

Ms Mayer spoke about her role as an MP, how she represents local people, and the importance of listening to young people’s perspectives.

Pupils were curious about what happens in Parliament and how decisions are made. Most were surprised to hear that on Monday evenings voting begins at 10pm at night. One youngster asked the MP her favourite colour. She replied “red”.

Alex Mayer MP said: “It was great to meet everyone to talk about democracy, why rules matter and how decisions like what we learn in school or how the trains run are made. The pupils are very confident and had some super questions. I think there are definitely some future journalists at St Leonard’s."

Headteacher Sarah Bowley also took the MP on a tour of the school including classrooms to meet pupils learning phonics, science and history, as well as seeing tennis skills in the playground and their school woods.
