Wildlife in Watercolour: Leighton Buzzard artist captures nature’s quiet energy for Bucks Art Weeks
Carmen Carreira's art is a direct product of the local landscape. Born in Buckinghamshire and now living in Leighton Buzzard, her studio overlooks the rolling fields of Southcourt Stud Farm, providing a constant stream of inspiration.

'I'm very lucky with my neighbours,' Carmen says. 'I can sit at my window and watch the foxes, red kites, and deer. They are my muses, and I never get tired of trying to capture that quiet, wild energy they have.'
Carmen's style is delicate and deeply observational. 'With my watercolours I'm not just trying to paint a likeness of a squirrel or a bird; I'm trying to capture a specific moment - like the way they look when they're tucked among the snowdrops in winter.'

This soft, atmospheric quality has made her work a favourite for local collectors and major brands including the National Trust alike. She is also a regular sight on the nearby Ascott Estate, often found with a sketchbook in hand.
'I love plein-air painting here,' Carmen explains. 'There's something about being physically in the gardens that changes how you draw. I'll be showing some of those nature-inspired watercolours and drawings as part of the Ascott Artists exhibition soon, and I'm always happy to chat with people about the best spots on the estate to find a bit of wildlife!'
Carmen’s beautiful showcase is just one highlight of the prestigious Ascott Artists exhibition running from 2nd to 17th June. Located in the historic Long Room within the spectacular grounds of the National Trust’s Ascott House and Gardens in Wing, 15 local artists will be showing their work, conveniently situated right next to the estate café - perfect for combining local culture with a summer day out.
The Ascott exhibition forms a key regional hub for the wider Bucks Art Weeks festival. Running from 6th to 21st June, this county-wide celebration sees over 300 independent artists and makers open their working studios or put on group displays. Offering a rare opportunity to meet local creatives, view live demonstrations, and purchase unique, handmade pieces directly from the source, the festival celebrates everything from traditional heritage crafts to contemporary sculpture and fine painting.
