The money was raised by club captain Adrian Stephenson and ladies captain Angela Samuels at golfing and social events during their year of office.

Angela, pictured presenting a cheque for £8,754 to Adrian Williams, community relationships manager for Arthritis Research UK, said: “More work needs to be done on understanding the causes and remedies for arthritis. Both my mother and grandmother suffered from arthritis and I am delighted that Leighton members have contributed so generously so more can be done to help sufferers.”

Added Mr Williams: “We really appreciate the massive amount of hard work that Angie and her team at Leighton Buzzard Golf Club put into raising this amazing total.

“The money will be spent on projects like our pain challenge, working to remove the devastating impact of pain and fatigue caused by arthritis. Our research takes place around the country, including our centres of excellence at Cambridge and Oxford, so the funds will be used in the region where it was raised.”

A similar amount is to be presented by immediate past club captain Adrian Stephenson to the Chiltern Multiple Sclerosis charity, while a donation of £2,500 has already been made to provide support for Kye Vincent, the Leighton youngster who suffered devastating life-changing amputations after being struck by meningitis.
