Brave Leighton battle against Luton

A thoroughly depleted Leighton Buzzard U14s side put in a brave performance against neighbours Luton in a 48-0 defeat.

Generously lent four players by the hosts, it was decided to play 13-a-side.

Buzzards made a slow start and Luton were soon two scores up. But Buzzards started to make life difficult, defending well to keep the half-time score at 17-, after a late Luton try.

For most of the first half Buzzards were continuously in the Luton 22 but could not penetrate the defence.

George, at no.8, rucked and tackled hard. Making short penetrating runs, it was George who came nearest to scoring, only to drop the ball when tackled on the try line.

Julian, captain, capitalised on the indiscipline of the Luton players and gained much ground in his quick tap and go penalties.

His box kicks also brought relief to the Buzzard defence.

He combined well with Albert who kicked well and made penetrating runs. Joining them in the backs were Luke and Angus, normally second row, but they proved to be mobile, tackled hard and were involved in several crunching tackles.

Lewis played excellently at full back, under difficult conditions, securing the ball under pressure and holding up the breakaway.

When he had the chance, he showed his pace in finding the gaps in the defence.

Hayden and Max were active in the rucks and did not flinch in taking the ball into contact. Padraig on the wing made his presence known.

Although the final score was 48-0, the Buzzard players, down to 12 due to injury at the end, played hard determined to put a score on the board.
