It was a real case of mixed emotions for on-loan Town defender Alfie Mawson at the weekend, writes Mike Simmonds.

The 20-year-old centre-half made his debut for Hatters at Alfreton Town on Saturday and saw the visitors romp into a 4-0 lead with just 18 minutes on the clock.

Unfortunately, he then had to be replaced at the interval after suffering a nasty cut to his foot that required stitches.

Speaking afterwards, Mawson said: “I was happy to get the clean sheet, it was a nice team to walk into.

“I was happy with my performance and gutted to come off at half time. I wish it was my head or something as I don’t kick with that.

“But I was happy to make my debut and now I want to get some more games.”

Mawson joined Town at the same time as fellow loanees Joe Davis and Pelly Ruddock Mpanzu, but had to play catch up to make an impression after the others were eligible for FA Trophy duty.

However boss John Still spoke of his admiration for the defender during Thursday’s press conference and with Andy Parry injured, thrust him straight in.

Mawson couldn’t have asked for a better defensive partner to make his Conference debut with either, as he was alongside the inspirational Steve McNulty.
