Bucks Scouts enjoy a carnival weekend

Nearly 2,200 young people and adult volunteers enjoyed a carnival camp over the May bank holiday weekend. The camp, that took two years in the planning, was held at the Penn Estate. The camp was attended by Scout Groups from all corners of the county.

At the camp, there was something for everyone. Activities included archery, caving, climbing, crafts, drumming, high ropes, human table football, roller skating, snake holding, zip line and zorbing. Jacob and Joseph said, “The best activities we have done are drumming, some of the rides where you have to jump over a moving pole, roller skating and the circus. We’re really looking forward to doing some climbing.” Daisy said, “I loved the zip wire, the inflatables and holding a snake. The snake was around my neck and it then started to move along my arm.”

John Chilver, Chairman of Buckinghamshire Council, who attended part of the event and tried playing the steel drums said, “It’s fantastic to see young people having a great time. It’s good to see that Scouting is thriving across the County. Congratulations to the organising team for putting this event together. Thanks to all of the volunteers who provide wonderful activities for the children and young people.”

When asked why they volunteer, Lynn and Martin said, “We volunteer so the young people can get involved in these sorts of experiences that they may not get elsewhere. It’s also rewarding seeing the young people having fun and interacting with their friends.” They added, “When you see a young person do something for the first time, and that might be lighting a fire, climbing or building a sedan chair and you see the smile on their face, it makes your day.”

Clare Clarke, who led the organising team for the event said, “When you see so many young people aged 4 to 17 having  a wonderful time, trying new activities, talking with other young people and sometimes being taken out of their comfort zone, then you know the event has been a big success.”

Clare added, “We are always looking for more volunteers so more sections can open and more young people can join. Whatever time you can give, we will find you a role. If you would like to get involved, please contact Bucks-Scouts.org.uk.
